However, the mattress-buying process doesn’t have to keep you tossing and turning.

To EASE the confusion of buying a mattress, the Better Sleep Council has developed some guidelines to walk you through the process and help you make the purchase of your dreams. It’s called the E.A.S.E Method:

3.) Shop for the right selection
4.) Ensure quality care

Use the E.A.S.E. online guide to help you. After all, you spend more time on your bed than on any other piece of furniture in your home. Invest in your rest and improve your quality of life.

I’ve discovered from having a futon that there are a lot of futon mattresses out there. And not all of them are good ones. To choose the right kind of mattress for your futon, use the following steps:

1. Check for thickness.
Some people try and get away with selling a mattress around one inch think. This is the thickness of a good comforter. Take my advice, and look at this before you buy it. Otherwise you’ll have some hard nights on thin ground.

2. Check for stuffing.
Cotton and polyester stuffing are attractants for dust mites. These are also the two worst fillings to clean. Watch out for these.

3. Look for plastic
Sometimes plastic covering will be inside a mattress because manufacturers think that no one will notice. WRONG! I noticed immediately from a crinkling sound when I sat on the mattress. This is not good quality.

Good luck in your mattress search!

Decide how much you want to spend, decide what you want and pay attention to the details of the warranty. Buy from a reputable seller and protect your warranty.

I recently went out to buy a king sized mattress. With a new baby on the way and the fact I co-sleep and already have a 4 year old that still crawls into bed with us at night upon occasion, I knew my queen sized bed was going to be too small. I talked my husband into it then went shopping.
At first, never having shopped for a mattress before, I was a bit confused by all the hype, brands and types of mattresses. My first trip to a furniture store for this, I got a salesman who was obviously only interested in selling me the most expensive mattress and box spring he could. He also decided at the beginning that I wasn’t worth his time and ignored me for a while, until I lay down on one of the most expensive mattresses in the place and stared at him for a while. (I am used to this reaction from salesmen/women. They tend to look at me and think I don’t have any money because I do not dress up to go shopping or something.) I came away from this with the idea I was going to have to plunk down a lot more money than my husband was going to spend for a mattress.
The next week I went back, on a hunch and found a different salesperson, one I knew and found that I could have a very nice mattress and box spring for about half of the price of the one that other guy wanted to sell me.
I took my time however and went to several stores in the 3 weeks I spent deciding. After a while I did come up with a way to sift through the garbage and simplify shopping for mattresses.

First of all, you have to decide what you want to spend. If you can tell the salesman what you are willing to spend, it is much easier for him to help you but be realistic. You are not going to get a decent kind sized mattress and box springs for 500 dollars for example (though it would be nice). Once you have down how much you want to spend, it also whittles down your choices as well which can be helpful too.

Decide what you want. I don’t know anything about spring counts and stuff but what I wanted was a nice supportive, not too soft mattress that didn’t feel like an earthquake has hit when I get up and down during the night. I am a type 2 insomniac and my husband wakes up slightly every time I get up or lay back down during the night. (type 2 insomniac means you can get to sleep but you wake up a lot during the night, I almost never get more that 3 hours uninterrupted sleep without getting up for at least 10 minutes lol.)

I found there are zero motion beds out there, though they are more expensive and also air beds which you can adjust by remote. I thought those were neat but the most comfortable bed I saw in my price range was a traditional I liked much better so I didn’t get one. I also found I hated pillow top mattresses. They didn’t support my back well enough. There are tons of choices out there but if you shop around, you ought to be able to find one that is just right. I ended up with a plush top traditional mattress.

Pay attention to the warranty and the details of how this warranty is administered! This is important. It might have a 20 year warranty but how do you get replacements if there is a problem. What if you need a replacement in 5 years and find that the price of the mattress is prorated for the time you have used it? What if they want you to actually mail it in for a replacement? (I didn’t see a warranty like that but that doesn’t mean it exists, the prorated warranties really surprised me though.)

Another thing my saleslady told me that made sense is that the warranty on most mattresses say in the fine print that for a mattress to be replaced, it has to be clean and sanitary. Apparently, if you find you need a replacement, if the guy who comes to inspect says it is unclean or unsanitary, they can void your warranty. My saleslady made it a point to tell me this because I am expecting and well, she knows how messy the first 6 weeks postpartum can be. She did have a mattress pad that guarantees that no stains will get through for 10 years or the company will replace your mattress. This is the same time period of the warranty on my mattress and cost about the same as would most good mattress pads and is guaranteed to last for 3 times as long as my previous mattress pads. Anyway, this might be something to think about if you do buy a mattress. Apparently protecting the mattress from stains can be important.

I figure if the bed is comfortable and the warranty if good and I am buying it from a reputable seller with reasonable policies, I am not going to worry about how it is made or how many springs it has in it or anything like that. I am buying a mattress, not learning to build one.

So my advice, bottom line, is to decide how much you want to spend, decide what you want and pay attention to the details of the warranty. Buy from a reputable seller and protect your warranty.

And last, be flexible if you can. If the perfect mattress is a hundred dollars over budget, and you can swing it without too much trouble, go for it. Conversely, don’t feel you have to spend your whole budget if the perfect mattress is below the range you set yourself. Instead, buy yourself a nice set of sheets or something.

Couples who’ve been sleeping on a “double” since they got married may think that’s just fine, until they learn that each person has only as much sleeping space as a baby’s crib! Here are size guidelines for shoppers from the Better Sleep Council:

Full beds, sometimes still called “double,” are 53 inches wide, which is just 15 inches wider than a twin size (single). That leaves each partner only 27 inches of personal space, or about the width of a crib. Both twin and full sizes are approximately 75 inches long, which may be too short for some adults, especially men.

Recommendations: Full size is only enough space for a single sleeper and only if under 5 feet 5 inches tall. Parents are increasingly choosing full size over twin for teenage bedrooms, and even for younger children in order to give parents a more comfortable place to rest when reading together at tuck-in time.

Queen beds are 60 inches wide by approximately 80 inches long – 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer than a full size mattress. These added inches can make all the difference in comfort, especially for couples, and have made the queen today’s most popular mattress size. However, with 30 inches of personal space, each adult still has 9 inches less width than if they slept alone in a twin bed.

Recommendations: Queen size is a good choice for guest rooms, smaller master bedrooms and for couples who prefer close quarters. It’s also a great choice for single sleepers who are also “sprawlers.”

King beds are 76 inches wide by approximately 80 inches long – about 18 inches wider than a queen. This is the closest a couple can come to having as much personal space (38 inches) as each would have on a twin bed. In fact, two twin extra-long beds pushed together are about the same size, an option that can offer a flexible arrangement for a guest room.

**For consumers on the west coast, there is also the “California King,” which is 72 inches wide by 84 inches long – 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a regular king.

Recommendations: King size is the best choice for couples that want maximum personal sleeping space. It’s also the best bet to accommodate that time on Sunday morning when children may pop into bed – or if the pets in your house have mattress privileges! However, size can be a problem. Even with a “split box spring” – two twin-size foundations to support it – to make a king set more manageable, it may be too big for some bedrooms or too bulky to navigate through some corridors, doors and stairwells. It’s a good idea to break out the tape measure if there is any doubt.

So many choices so little time! Whether you’re shopping for a Simmons twin mattress, Simmons queen mattress, or a king mattress Simmons offers, we suggest that you do a little bit of homework to determine what the right size mattress is for your needs.

Depending on the room size or whether you are interested in placing more than one bed in a room, you might want to consider a Simmons twin mattress or a Simmons full mattress. When planning the actual layout of your room, refer to the following dimensions for the Simmons twin mattress and Simmons full mattress:

Simmons twin mattress: 39” x 75”
Simmons full mattress: 54” x 75”

When planning for a larger size bed, the Simmons queen mattress is the standard size for queen bedding.

Simmons queen mattress: 60” x 80”

Finally, you’ve got the space and you want the luxury of having a king size bed. A Simmons king mattress provides an unparalleled sleep surface. Stretch out, relax, and enjoy a better sleep while a Simmons king mattress provides ample room and comfort.

Simmons king mattress: 76” x 80”

It doesn’t matter which size Simmons mattress you eventually choose. Better support, better firmness, better construction and better overall features all add up to a better night’s sleep.

Why are today’s mattresses so thick? Will regular sheets fit a thick mattress?

1. Today’s advanced cushioning layers should fully conform to your body for complete support and maximum comfort. The combined height of the cushioning layers has to be thick enough to accommodate the curves of your body. To properly cover a thick mattress, you’ll need to buy deep-pocket fitted sheets.

2. My new mattress hides part of my headboard. What can I do?
You may be able to replace your current frame with a low-profile frame. If that’s not low enough — or if a low-profile frame isn’t compatible with the construction of your current frame — you may be able to purchase a low-profile box spring.

3. How do I know what mattress set is the right one for me?
Most people buy a new mattress set because they are unhappy with their existing set. Comfort levels are unique to each person, so the only one who can really answer this question is you. Tell us your needs and our sales associates will locate and demonstrate a model based on your criteria. Note that we offer a 60-night comfort guarantee to ensure satisfaction.

4. I heard that you need a hard mattress for bad backs. Is this true?
There is no guarantee a mattress will cure a backache. But if you choose the mattress set that’s right for you, comfort is bound to increase. The construction of a mattress is what allows for proper back support. Generally, the construction of the inner spring, as well as the upholstery layers, work together to conform to your body, which promotes healthy spinal alignment. You do not need to sleep on a ‘hard’ mattress. A supportive bed with some plushness can give you both support and comfort. The plusher surface can actually be quite beneficial. Aside from offering comfort, it helps to promote good circulation.

5. Does Sleep Country Canada have an exchange or refund policy?
We have a one-time comfort exchange policy that allows customers to exchange their new mattress set for a different comfort feel. Exchange must be made within 60 nights of delivery. Please note that comfort levels are not considered the manufacturer’s responsibility. If you have concerns about the comfort of your mattress, be sure to contact us within 60 nights of purchase.

6. How does Sleep Country Canada 60-night comfort guarantee work?
We employ a lot of expertise to ensure you have selected the right mattress set to start with. However, if you find you are uncomfortable after you receive your set, simply contact us and we’ll get the problem solved.
Note that we must limit the number of exchanges to one per mattress set purchased beginning with the original date of delivery. If in the exchange you choose a more expensive set, you will pay the difference. If you choose a less expensive model, we will refund the difference. This 60-night home trial applies to only the mattress and box spring. It does not include adjustable beds, headboard/ footboards or daybeds, and is subject to a $35.00 re-delivery charge.
Dirty, stained, damaged, or abused mattress sets will not be accepted for exchange. As well, labels must be intact on the mattress and box spring to allow for a comfort exchange.

7. The box spring of my new mattress set did not fit into my home. What can I do?
Mattresses offer some give for negotiating corners and low or narrow stairwells. But box springs have a wooden construction and will not bend. Purchasing split-box springs allows for better access into space-restricted dwellings. Split box springs vary by manufacturer so ask one of our sales associates for advice.

A King Mattress is approximately 76 x 80 inches. This ample size is the most comfortable for two adults. The extra space in width allows for unrestricted movement during the night and provides room for those animal lovers that like to sleep with their pets at their side.

A Queen Size Mattress is approximately 60 x 80 inches. It is a popular choice for couples, and not as bulky as the King Mattress which looks better in a large room.

A Full Size Mattress is approximately 54 x 75 inches. It is ideal for one adult. A Full Mattress fits well in smaller rooms or guest rooms and can save you money on cheaper bedding.

A Twin size mattress is 39 x 75 inches. It is the smallest standard mattress available and is ideal for children and easy to move around.

That’s Ruth’s problem in “The Princess and the Pea,” through August 30, at Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences, 10 Marriott Drive, Lincolnshire.

Even though her bed was stacked with mattresses, she suffered all night. We asked Ruth (actor Dara Cameron) what caused her discomfort. “I knew that there was something underneath there,” she said. “It was a very bumpy night.”

Ruth endured the torture because of her love for Prince Wellington David, whose mother was upset that he had fallen in love with a commoner. “We are two peas in a pod, the prince and I,” Ruth declared. “He’s a writer and he writes about faraway lands and beautiful things, and I love to read his stories. We have a lot in common.”

The determined young woman admitted that it has been an interesting challenge getting used to the prince’s mother, Queen Evermean. “But I think I proved myself,” Ruth said.

Singing all the time helped ease Ruth’s tension. “I think singing is a wonderful way to express my feelings,” she declared.
